At my doctors office you can park in the basement. It is kind of like a cave. The cement in it is so smooth and often times the water drips from the parking lot up above leaving puddles every where. I have honestly not thought anything of it. I have walked down there numerous times. But yesterday as we were leaving the office it happened. I slipped. I had Harper on my hip because I didn't want her walking around down there and getting hit by a car. So when I fell she fell. I was the most awful feeling in the world. I couldn't stop it and I tried so hard to. I fell so I took most of the impact but she still hit the pavement, so did I, and so did my 28 week pregnant belly.
The next thing you know we are surrounded by maintenance guys, hospital staff, one of the CEO's, and the ER staff is on the way with a stretcher. I was of course bawling. Harper even after hitting her head has stopped crying and was taking it all in.
In the ER they ran a lot of test. They checked on Finley's heartbeat (which was perfect). They took Harper for an X-Ray of her skull to check for any damage (none thank goodness). And then they sent us up for a peek at Finley via Ultrasound. She was safe in her bubble. The only damage was to me. including a scraped and swollen knee and a huge bruise on my hip where I absorbed most of the impact of the fall.
It was the worst moment in my parenting life. I know accidents happen but I felt like I failed. I felt like it was my fault and somehow I should have been able to prevent it. It really hurt my pride. Even though we were sent home and every one was okay I just couldn't stop crying yesterday. I know its part of the drill though. More accidents will probably happen and I'm sure I'll hurt just the same. I just love my babies so much and my goodness you'd do almost anything you can to protect them.
All I can say is I'm thankful today is a new day. A day that can only hopefully be better than yesterday.
